Usted
Melinka.Bronx.NY.2024.ADELANTE CON TODAS LAS FUERZAS DE LA HISTORIA.NOS VEREMOS.???.

Dorinda,

You may have seen the headlines circulating in the days following the failed border negotiations in the Senate — Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is considering the release of thousands of people from detention centers.1

We agree. Thousands of people should be released from immigration prison.

Remember, there is no reason to incarcerate our immigrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking community members. That’s not just a moral stance, it’s a legal one, too. U.S. law always allows ICE the discretion not to detain immigrants. The use of civil detention is a choice our government is making — and ICE just implicitly revealed this to be true.

But we want to break down what’s actually happening: ICE is weaponizing our community to push for more supplemental funding to expand their county jail and for-profit prison network. By invoking an unfounded fear of our community as a negotiation tactic, the agency is dehumanizing the lives of parents and children as leverage for more money.2

And for what? To line the pockets of private prison corporations, like the GEO Group and CoreCivic, who make billions of dollars in tax-payer money to detain people seeking safety and a better future in the U.S.

Year after year, ICE’s budget continues to grow at astronomical levels. Since the agency’s inception in 2003, its budget has nearly tripled, with much of it going towards holding people in detention centers across the country. Over 90% of those people are held in facilities run by private prison companies.3, 4

This nation allegedly locks up immigrants at scale to ensure that everyone navigating the immigration system shows up to their court dates. In reality, this practice erects barriers to legal representation and inflicts great harm. Our client advocates have seen it all: traumatized children, medical neglect, and even death.5

No one seeking safety should be incarcerated, mistreated, and denied the right to due process.

These headlines were meant to stoke fear, but we won’t be baited into believing harmful narratives that villainize and dehumanize our community. And I know you won’t fall for it, either. Click the post below to like and share our Instagram post sounding the alarm on these fear-mongering narratives:

RAICES Texas Instagram Post Reads: ICE is fearmongering, but news is still repeating it as truth

At RAICES, we believe that people should be free while their cases are being adjudicated — and no human being should be detained simply for coming to the U.S. in pursuit of safety and security for themselves and their families.

Yours in the fight for freedom,

Faisal Al-Juburi (he/him/his)Chief External Affairs OfficerRAICES

Online event: Building solidarity and opposing the New Cold War – Peace delegates report back from China

Dear friend,A quick reminder that next Sunday, 18 February, together with the International Manifesto Group, we're holding an online event Building solidarity and opposing the New Cold War – Peace delegates report back from China.Although the Biden administration has made some small gestures towards improving US-China relations, the US continues to escalate its campaign of encirclement and containment. The US has ramped up its military aid to Taiwan; it is attempting to strengthen the AUKUS nuclear alliance; it is doing everything it can to prevent China's emergence as a major computing power; it is imposing sanctions and tariffs on China; and it is relentlessly spreading lurid anti-China slander.Recognising the terrible dangers posed by the New Cold War (and its potential degeneration into a hot war), a number of peace activists from the US have recently taken part in delegations to China, in order to build understanding and solidarity, and to see China's reality with their own eyes.We will hear back from these peace delegates and discuss ways to continue building people-to-people links between the West and China, and to develop a powerful movement for peace and cooperation.
